7 Card Stud Poker Rules

The two forms of 7 Card Stud Poker use the same basic rules. The difference between these two games will be explained below, in the section about the goals of the game.

But, before explaining the rules, I recommend downloading a poker room software (I recommend PartyPoker), so you can get familiar with the rules of the game, while playing the game for fun. That way, you should more easily understand what I'm referring to in the explanation below.

It is the goal of the game to get the best hand, using 5 of the cards you are holding. In 7 Card Stud Hi/Lo, one half of the pot is won by the player with the best hand, while the other half is won by the player with the best qualifying low hand. To qualify, one has to have 5 cards in the range from Ace to 8 (Ace being the lowest). Should more than 1 player qualify for the low half of the pot, the player with the lowest high card wins the pot (3, 4, 5, 6, 7 beats A, 2, 3, 4, 8). Should nobody qualify for the low side in 7 Card Stud Hi/Lo, the winner of the high side will receive the entire pot.

At the beginning of the game, each player will have to post an ante. The ante amount varies by the game you play. After each player has posted the ante, a 52-card deck will be used to deal cards. Each player will receive a total of 7 cards. But, at first, each player will receive 3 cards, 2 of which are dealt face down, so other players can't see them and the third one being dealt face up. Then, the player with the lowest "up" card must start betting. Should two or more players have the same lowest "up" cards, the person that has to initiate the betting will be determined by the suite of the cards (clubs is lowest, then comes diamonds and hearts; spades is highest).

After the first betting round is completed, a fourth card will be dealt face-up to every player still in the pot. Now, the players showing the highest hand starts the betting round.

After the second betting round is finished, a fifth card will be dealt face-up to everybody still in the pot. Again, the highest hand showing starts the betting round that comes now.

After betting in the third round is completed, a sixth card will be dealt face-up. Another betting round now stats, which will also begin with the player showing the best hand.

After this fourth betting round is complete, a last card is dealt to everybody still in the hand. This card is dealt face down, and the player showing the best hand initiates the last betting round, which will then be followed by the showdown, where the winner of the hand is determined.
